Patí de vela, also known as patí Catalan, is a monotype class of light sailing vessel with a single crew. Characterized by being a marconi-type single-sail catamaran without a boom and the peculiarity of not having a rudder or tiller.
The steering of the boat is carried out with the movement and distribution of the skipper’s weight along and across the deck of the boat and with the sheet, which controls the sail. It is specially designed to run aground on the beach as it has no oars or rudder.
Designed by the Catalan Mongé brothers in 1942 , it is the formal and advanced development of an artefact that was born on the beaches of Badalona at the beginning of the century. In principle it had no sail and propulsion was done by rowing, but it was rudimentary and heavy. The sail was added later. Finally the definitive creators of the class lightened it and added the steel bulkhead making the boat exactly as we know it now.
Its structure is made of wood. It is made up of two hulls or floats that fulfill the function of anti-drift planes. The hulls are joined to each other by the cover, composed of five independent benches that provide rigidity to the whole and serve as support for the device, as well as support for the pattern itself.
Arbola is a single aluminum mast, the inclination and stiffness can be varied during navigation by means of stays and practicable staves and a device known as a flexor respectively. Rigging a triangular sail handled by means of a sheet that slides freely on the steel batten installed entirely at the stern of the boat.
